What Is MFIPPA?
The Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA) governs how local government bodies handle personal information and public access to records. It applies to municipalities, school boards, public utilities, transit and police services, fire departments, conservation authorities, health boards, and other local agencies. Separate legislation covers provincial ministries and federal institutions.
Effective since January 1, 1991, MFIPPA requires municipal organizations to safeguard individuals’ personal information held in government records. It establishes a framework for privacy protection, outlining how personal data must be collected, used, disclosed, and disposed of under municipal control.
