Why Are Road Cuts Filled with Gravel Before They're Paved?

Public Notice
Ever wonder why some road cuts are filled with gravel for weeks before being paved?

When crews cut into a hard-surface road to complete underground work, the area is backfilled with gravel. That gravel needs time to settle and compact properly before the final road surface can be replaced, usually about 3 to 4 weeks.

What you can do:
• Slow down and take it easy
• Reduce speed when approaching road cuts and gravel-filled trenches
• Watch for uneven surfaces and give yourself extra stopping distance
• Help protect your vehicle from unnecessary bumps and wear
• Keep roads safer for fellow drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, and road crews
• Give the gravel time to settle properly for a smoother, longer-lasting repair

A few extra seconds can make a big difference. Thanks for helping keep our roads safe and in great shape!
